INTRODUCTION

Bringing Fortnite Sprites Collections to Twitch

To promote Sprites in Fortnite, promote the new chapter launch, and bring the community together around Fortnite creators on Twitch, we developed a Twitch Extension that turns watching a Twitch stream into a collection game with real in-game rewards.

The Fortnite Sprites Twitch Extension encourages viewers of participating Twitch channels to catch Fortnite sprites as they appear live on stream. Every collected sprite counts toward a personal collection to unlock an in-game reward, a place on the leaderboards, and the ability for the streamer to take over other streamers when a community reaches that goal.

How the Fortnite Sprites Twitch Extension Rewards Viewers for Watching Their Favorite Creators

To keep viewers coming back, the collection reset every week. Viewers could collect sprites again and complete a new collection to earn another reward, giving them a fresh goal throughout the campaign.

The Extension was open to any streamer on Twitch and available in 13 languages, so communities around the world could take part. Midway through the campaign, we updated the Extension with the new chapter designs without any downtime, so viewers and streamers could keep playing while the experience was refreshed live.

OBJECTIVE

Reward Viewers for Watching Fortnite Creators

The Fortnite Sprites Twitch Extension connects Fortnite players, Twitch viewers, and Twitch streamers. It was designed to drive watch time, promote Fortnite Sprite and the new chapter, give communities a reason to rally behind their favorite creators, and deliver exclusive in-game rewards across a multi-week campaign.

The key objectives for this project include:

  • Encourage viewers to watch Fortnite creators on Twitch and collect Fortnite-themed objects live on stream, promoting active participation and increased viewership for streamers.
  • Deliver new collections and rewards across four campaign phases, keeping viewers coming back throughout the campaign.
  • Activate communities to work together on collection goals that unlock “Takeovers,” where one creator takes over another channel’s stream.
  • The community can counter can counter a takeover  by spamming a designated emote.
  • Enabling streamers to promote and share their Epic Creator Code.
  • Offer streamers a simple setup and an accessible experience for both viewers and creators.
SOLUTION

Driving Watch Time with Rewards and Community Takeovers

The Fortnite Sprites Twitch Extension adds interactive, collectible gameplay directly to Twitch livestreams. Built on our PlayTwo framework, the platform integrates with the Twitch and Fortnite APIs to track and manage the campaign in real time, and is built to handle large numbers of concurrent viewers across participating channels.

Below are the key features of the Fortnite Sprites Twitch Extension:

  • Collection game While watching a stream with the Extension enabled, Fortnite-themed objects appear at random for viewers to catch. Collecting every kind of object in a phase earns that phase’s featured reward.
  • Phased rewards The campaign runs across four phases. A new object collection and new rewards go live at the start of each phase, and a Lobby Hack is revealed at the end of each one.
  • Channel takeover When a community collects enough objects to reach its goal, the streamer can take over another channel’s stream. Viewers on the targeted channel can counter the takeover by spamming a designated emote.
  • Leaderboards Every collected object boosts a viewer’s rank on the Channel and Global Leaderboards, and lifts their favorite streamer on the Streamer Leaderboard.
  • Reward users Viewers who connect their Twitch and Epic Games accounts receive in-game rewards directly on their Epic account, including the Sprite Slash Spray, the Sprite’s Revenge Spray, and The Salty Duck Loading Screen for collecting all nine objects.
  • Streamer controls Streamers add the Extension from the Twitch Creator Dashboard, enter their Support a Creator code in the configuration panel, and stream in the Fortnite category.
  • Live updates and localization The Extension was refreshed mid-campaign with the new chapter designs without any downtime, and is available in 13 languages so viewers around the world can take part.
  • API integrations The server integrates with the Epic and Twitch APIs to manage user data, leaderboards, and reward distribution.

RESULTS

Boosting Viewership and Rewarding the Community

The Fortnite Sprites Twitch Extension gave viewers a reason to tune in, stay longer, and support the creators they love. Collectible objects, phased rewards, and leaderboards encouraged repeat viewing across the full seven-week campaign, while takeovers created cross-channel moments that spread the campaign across the Twitch Fortnite community.

It also gave streamers a simple way to engage their audience and grow their ranking. Viewers who connected their Twitch and Epic accounts earned exclusive sprays, lobby hacks, and a loading screen in Fortnite.

The Extension’s collection and takeover mechanics proved flexible enough to be reused. The same approach was later adapted for the Fortnite Star Wars Twitch Extension.

With thousands of participating Twitch channels and millions of collected sprites, the Extension was a major success in promoting Fortnite Sprites and the new chapter across the Twitch Fortnite community.
